The 1975’s Late Night with Seth Myer’s Performance Review

The 1975, a band hailing from Manchester, England has caught my attention for some time now. I have lost count of how many times I have replayed all of their songs. The band consists of the lead singer, Matty Healy (throws a fit if someone calls him Matt), bassist, Ross McDonald, drummer, George Daniel, and lead guitarist, Adam Hann. They also have a saxophonist, John Waugh who also goes on tour with them.

The band has released 2 albums entitled, The 1975 and I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it. (Yes, a long title for a great album). They both have songs that you replay over and over again and yet I never get tired of hearing them. I have also lost the amount of times I have seen this band perform live and they are pretty awesome live. The self-titled album, The 1975 debuted at number 3 on Billboard rock charts. Their sophomore album, debuted at number 1 on Billboard charts. The band cover went from being black and white to pink and white. (I mean I am not complaining about this. I really like the color pink). The band has performed at many festivals in the United States like Coachella, Governor’s Ball, Lollapalooza, and the Meadows Festival.

The band is getting some fame from those who never even heard of them. The band performed on Saturday Night Live as a way to promote the new album. Many did not like that Matty only wore a blazer as his top. As a fan, I enjoyed watching the performance while others in my household enjoyed Matty’s choice of clothing. The band performed 2 of their singles, at the time, from their new album that were released, ‘Love Me’ and ‘UGH!’

He is wearing a blazer and many viewers, who were not fans of the band, had a problem with it.

The band did a lot of promotion for their second album. From performing singles like ‘Love Me,’ ‘UGH!’ ‘A Change of Heart,’ and ‘Somebody Else.’ The band eventually went onto Late Night with Seth Myers to perform their singles, ‘Somebody Else’ and ‘A Change of Heart.’

When they performed my favorite song, ‘Somebody Else,’ I reacted like any of their fans would: I started to sing along. When it got to my favorite part of the song:

Get someone you love?
Get someone you need?
Fuck that, get money
I can’t give you my soul ’cause we’re never alone
Get someone you love?
Get someone you need?
Fuck that, get money
I can’t give you my soul ’cause we’re never alone
Get someone you love?
Get someone you need?
Fuck that, get money
I can’t give you my soul ’cause we’re never alone
Get someone you love?
Get someone you need?
Fuck that, get money
I can’t give you my soul ’cause we’re never alone

I could not help but sing it so loud in my house because it is so catchy! Yes, the meaning behind the song is not a positive one but you have to give it to the band for making it catchy and being one of my favorite songs.

Since their other performance, ‘A Change of Heart,’ which had to be viewed online (and which I obviously watched). It was another catchy song. My favorite lines from ‘A Change of Heart,’ is:

You used to have a face straight out of a magazine
Now you just look like anyone
I just had a change of heart
I feel as though I was deceived
I never found love in the city
I just sat in self-pity and cried in the car
Oh, I just had a change of heart

Loved the fact that The 1975 recycled lyrics from their song ‘Robbers.’ (The song starts off like this: ‘She had a face straight out of a magazine.’ Coincidence no?) Even a title from one of their songs, ‘The City.’

Both performances were great. I honestly did question Matty’s huge flower bowtie for a moment but overall, it was a good performance. (Maybe that’s his style now?) As a viewer, it looked like they were having fun performing 2 of their hits. I would have enjoyed watching the 2 performances even more in the audience because I would have been surrounded by ones that enjoy listening to them as much as I do. Even though I watched it in the comfort of my own home, it did not make me dislike them at all. It allowed me to jam out in the comfort of my own home.
