Women’s Soccer

The team currently boasts a 1-4 record at the end of September, beginning their 2009 season on Aug. 29 with a 5-0 loss at Pace University in Pleasantville.

Although the lady Mavericks were shutout, goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge notched eight saves in the game.

On Sept. 2, the squad showed some fight and took Post University to a double overtime but eventually lost, 2-1.

Junior Andrea Nash scored the lone goal for the lady Mavs in the 44th minute while senior Samantha DeVore made nine saves in what was her first game in front of the net.

The ladies collected their first win of 2009 on Sept. 9, beating SUNY Maritime, 5-1.

DiLegge led the team with two goals while DeVore maintained a shutout for the first 60 minutes. Nash and Anne Meenagh also scored in the game, while junior Diane Rayala scored on an assist from Kelly Smith.

ECC competition began for the lady Mavs on Sept. 19 and they dropped a decision to Dowling, losing 8-2.

Delmara Reece scored her first goal of the year while Casey Kondelka netted a point on an assist from Nash.

At press time, the lady Mavericks soccer team is in seventh place in the ECC standings and will begin the month of October against rival Molloy.

Lacrosse

Men’s lacrosse coach Steve Manitta recently announced the commitment of 32 players that will play for the Mavericks lacrosse team this upcoming year.

Since the addition of the program was announced in the fall of 2008, efforts were made to recruit players for the upcoming year. Of the 32 recruits, 25 will be incoming freshman.

“I am very hopeful and excited to be leading a new program,” Manitta told the Impact last year when he was named head coach.

“Mercy has a good reputation and we are hoping to turn Mercy into a lacrosse-friendly environment.”

Aiding Manitta in the coaching duties will be Jordan Levine, a former All-American at Albany, and current Major League Lacrosse All-Star.

The men and women’s lacrosse seasons will begin in the spring of 2010.
