The minute Inventing Anna came out in 2022, I was immediately interested in learning more about the lore of Anna Delvey. The show, based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, follows how she scammed New York’s elite into believing she was a wealthy socialite, even though she had no money to back it up. It seemed too wild to be real, so I had to dive deeper into the details of her story especially after watching Julia Garner’s portrayal of her.
What makes the show interesting isn’t just Anna’s confidence in playing a role she created, it’s the way she was able to pull it off. She didn’t have a dime to her name, but she convinced people that she was a millionaire. She got invited to fancy parties, stayed at luxury hotels, and even tried to open her own arts club. The crazy part is, she wasn’t some mastermind. She was just really good at pretending. And for a while, no one questioned her.
The way she got away with it says a lot about the world she was trying to fit into. Anna didn’t need actual money she needed the image. And that’s what she gave people. She was always acting like she was on top of the world, and for a while, everyone bought into it. Watching this, it was easy to see how someone could fall for it. She knew exactly how to blend in with New York’s rich and famous, even though she was totally faking it.
As for the people she scammed, they kind of played into the whole thing too. These were people who had a lot of money and influence, yet they didn’t see through her act. They were so caught up in the idea of being close to someone they thought was important, they never stopped to ask the right questions. It’s wild how easily they were convinced that Anna was the real deal.
Of course, it all came crashing down. Anna got caught and was eventually convicted of multiple felonies. But the show doesn’t make her out to be some villain. It just shows how she pulled off her scam. And the whole thing feels like a combination of crazy, and a little bit sad. She was able to convince people with nothing more than her ability to fake it until she made it.
In the end, Inventing Anna gives a glimpse into just how far someone will go to create a life they’ve always dreamed of, no matter how much of it is fake.
