Drink Like A Nerd

Word nerds gather round as we pour into some of our favorite novels with an alcoholic twist. Tim Federle’s Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist is full of amazing recipes for cocktails and bar bites as well as little bits of literary knowledge.

The tidbits about the novels from which the drinks get their names are occasionally laugh out loud funny. Federle chooses from a range of titles from classics like Romeo and Juliet to modern titles like Brigit Jones’s Diary though the Judy Blume cocktail holds a special place in my heart. Now here are some of my favorites as the book says you don’t need to know your Mary Shelley from your Bloody Marys to enjoy these drinks:

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margarita! (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margret. by Judy Blume)

For this drink you will need: coarse salt, 1 ½ ounces of tequila, 1 of ounce lime juice and ½ ounce of triple sec. Rim your cup with salt and then put all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and strain into your cup. Add a lime wedge if you’re feeling classy but this drink will have you feeling as good as a long gab session with your bestie.

Infinite Zest (Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace)

For this drink you will need: 2 ounces of vodka, 1 ounce of limoncello, and ½ ounce of lemon juice. Shake the ingredients and strain over ice. This tennis ball yellow drink will leave you in catatonic bliss.

The Pitcher of Dorian Grey Goose (The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde)

This drink is perfect for book club. You’ll need 10 sprigs of mint (cleaned), 1 12 ounce can of frozen lemonade, and 2 cups of vodka. Tear the mint and put them in a pitcher. Then add the can of lemonade stirring until thawed. Add the vodka and 3 cups of cold water and stir. Pour over ice and serve nobody will care about that week’s selected reading.

The Tequila Mockingbird (To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee)

This is probably my favorite book so this tequila shot must be included (after all it is the name of the book). You’re going to need a 1 ½ ounces of tequila, 2 drops of hot sauce and a dill pickle. Add the two drops of hot sauce to the tequila shot and then slam it before munching on the pickle. If this isn’t the perfect reminder of the fickle justice system then I don’t know what is.

If you are still thirsty then go out and buy the book but remember read passionately and drink responsibly.
