The conference’s best weekly player is simple to pick by the ECC when the player hits almost .500 at the plate.
Mercy first baseman Kelly Bentson batted .483 over the week. She recored 14 hits while blasting 5 doubles and two home runs. She scored 10 times and registered nine RBIs. She totaled a whopping slugging average of .862.
The Lady Mavericks are currently 19-19 overall and 10-11 in the East Coast Conference.
On April 13, Mercy College softball team split a doubleheader against the New York Institute of Technology. In Game 1, NYIT won, 5-2, while the Mavericks came back to a 9-5 victory in the second contest.
In the first game, NYIT scored in the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead against Mercy. The Mavericks made the score at 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Shannon Forbes recorded an RBI double. The game ended with the Bears winning with a final score of 5-2.
Mary Sieber pitched the whole game, surrendering five runs, although only one was earned.
During the second game Mercy was down 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, until they played for six runs in the inning to take the lead. That intense fifth inning had Mercy scoring on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly, a fielding error, an RBI double, an RBI single and a steal of home.
Kelly Bentson, a junior, piled it on in the next frame with a two-run homer. Junior reliever Jessica Simpson earned the win as she pitched 2.2 shutout innings. Her record improved to 3-1.
Junior Brittany Serrao was also added to the Honor Roll for last week’s play. Bentson batted .483 that past week, recording 14 hits in 29 at-bats. She drove in nine runs, scored 10 times, smacked five doubles and hit two homers. Bentson posted a slugging percentage of .862.
Serrao recorded a 2.18 ERA over 25.2 innings pitched this past week. She won four times and struck out 14 batters. This was Serrao’s second time being named to the Honor Roll this season.
Mercy battled the University of Bridgeport on April 18 with one loss and one win during the double header. The first game Mercy won 6-3. In the top of the first for Mercy, Shelby Johnson hit a massive three run home run to score Chrissie Cleary and Shannon Forbes. During the top of the sixth, Johnson singled to center field and advanced to third on an error. Kimberly Crnkovich advanced to second and also scored on an error. Kelly Bentson doubled to left center and Johnson scored. Later, Jackie Couillard reached on a fielder’s choice and Bentson scored.
During the second Bridgeport game, the Lady Mavericks lost 4-3. During the top of the third, Clearly RBI doubled to the left field as Forbes scored. In the top of the fourth inning, Couillard RBI doubled to left center as Bentson scored. Finally, during the top of the seventh inning, Briana Panarese reached on an error, as Milana Gilaga scored.
The Mavericks, who are currently in fourth place in the ECC standings, have five double headers left in the season.
