As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the quarterback position is once again at the center of attention. Two of the most talked-about prospects are Cam Ward, the dynamic quarterback from Miami via transferring from Washington State, and Shedeur Sanders, the talented signal-caller from Colorado. Both players have had exceptional seasons, showcasing their skills and potential at the college level. While Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has garnered considerable hype due to his performance in his senior season under his father’s coaching, Cam Ward has quietly emerged as one of the most impressive quarterbacks in college football.
While Shedeur Sanders has undoubtedly had a standout campaign and is certainly a top-tier talent, there are compelling reasons why Cam Ward should be considered the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft over Sanders. From his physical tools to his production in a pro-style system, Ward offers more as a future franchise quarterback, making him the safer and more promising option for any team looking to build around a long-term signal caller.
When it comes to projecting quarterbacks to the NFL, physical attributes are often a key factor in evaluation. In this regard, Cam Ward has a distinct advantage over Shedeur Sanders. Ward has the ideal size, arm strength, and mobility that NFL teams covet in a top-tier quarterback prospect.
At 6’2” and 210 pounds, Ward has the build to withstand the physicality of the NFL game. His arm strength is among the best in this year’s draft class. He can make every throw—whether it’s a deep ball, a sidearm sling, or a quick-rhythm pass—across the entire field. His velocity on throws and the zip he puts on intermediate routes are particularly impressive, and these are traits that translate well to the next level. Ward’s arm strength allows him to stretch defenses vertically, which is a critical asset in today’s pass-happy NFL offense.
On the other hand, Shedeur Sanders, while undoubtedly a talented quarterback, lacks the same physical tools. Standing at 6’1”, he’s slightly shorter than Ward, and while his arm is solid, it doesn’t quite match the zip and velocity Ward can generate. Sanders’ arm strength is often criticized for being limited when attempting deeper throws or forcing the ball into tight windows. His game relies more on accuracy and football IQ, but in the NFL, having the ability to drive the ball downfield with authority is a premium skill.
Ward has undoubtedly more physical skill than Sanders, giving him the higher ceiling, and more of a reason for teams to choose him to become a franchise QB in the NFL instead of Sanders, even though I believe both are top tier talent that are very hard to go wrong with. I believe there’s no doubt both QBs should be chosen within the top 5 picks, but Ward’s ceiling, and the ability he had shown to improve the University of Miami’s offense with unproven weapons while Sanders had Heisman trophy winner Travis Hunter, should be more than enough to make him the first pick on whatever team has that pick.
Both quarterbacks possess leadership qualities and confidence in the pocket, but Cam Ward’s poise under pressure is a standout trait. Ward has consistently demonstrated the ability to remain calm in chaotic situations, manage a game-winning drive, and execute in the fourth quarter when stakes are highest. His ability to keep his eyes downfield while maneuvering in the pocket and his sense of timing make him a more composed presence in high-pressure situations compared to Sanders.
While Sanders is known for his confidence and leadership, his tendency to force plays and take unnecessary risks under pressure has sometimes resulted in turnovers or missed opportunities. He takes far too many sacks at the collegiate level and desperately needs to work on that part of his game to get better as a pro, as Ward has far more pocket presence and awareness. I believe this makes Ward stand out from Sanders, and proves he is the better prospect.
While Shedeur Sanders is undoubtedly an exciting talent with immense potential, Cam Ward offers a more complete package for an NFL team looking for a franchise quarterback. His superior physical tools, experience in a pro-style offense, ability to perform under pressure, and development over the years make him a safer bet for a high pick. For NFL teams that need a quarterback who is ready to play at a high level right away, Cam Ward should be the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
