Five years. Movie fanatics waited for this sequel for five years.
When The Joker came out in 2019, I was a sucker for this movie. As a critic myself, this had all of the elements to make an unsettling, dark, crime film. It w0n some awards, and had many remarkable quotes and scenes. Joaquin Phoenix was actually giving Heath a run for his money in my book.
Fast forward to about a little over a year ago, we found out this sequel will be a musical/ crime movie. I was not pleased in the slightest with this news. Knowing how the first film was very successful, I had high hopes, even with this news. I value run time of the film as well, seeing this was over two hours had me hype.
About two weeks ago, I start seeing the reviews of the movie. As a critic, I wanted to go see it for myself to see what all of the commotion is about. The Rotten Tomatoes critics, reviews, and the IMDB score kept decreasing, which made my heart rate increase. This past Friday, five teammates and I went to see it, we were left speechless. Not in a good way.
Everything that was created, brought into play in the first film, was thrown away. There was no plot. Every good moment was overshadowed by this unnecessary musical. We thought it was more of a courtroom drama, but it failed to even be that. To make matters worse, Lady Gaga attempted to play Harley Quinn, in which she failed miserably. I used to think sequels could be better than the first but boy was I wrong. The last straw for me and I’m sure many more was the ending to this film. It was mind-blowing – and had me beside myself leaving the theater, ruined Arthur Fleck’s character, as well as the Joker’ss.
Need my money and my time back asap. Todd Phillips, you are done. And that’s no joke.
