While the New York Jets finished the year with a record of 8-8 and missed the playoffs, but in my opinion, the 2013-2014 season was a success for the Jets. Before the season started, the expectations for the Jets were minimal at best. Nobody expected the Jets to even be competitive, never mind be competing for a playoff spot in December. The season was full of ups and downs for the Jets. For majority of the season, the Jets varied wins and losses each week, and at times looked like one of the best teams in the league, and the week after look like one of the worst teams. The up and down season was rough on both the fans and the players as well.

The Jets rattled off huge victories over the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, and ended the season eliminating division rival Miami Dolphins.  But also had some brutal losses that really were the reason the team was not able to get into the playoffs. All in all though, I found this season to be a success, and gave fans a sense of optimism for the future of the team. The Jets started rookie Geno Smith at quarterback for all 16 games. Smith had many up and downs, but in my opinion, showed enough promise to be the quarterback for the future. While Smith showed promise, the talent level around him was not up to par.

The offseason for the Jets is going to be the most important one in recent memory. This will be the first time General Manager John Idzik will truly have his way in which areas he wants to address to help the team. If it was up to me, I would look to add talent on the offensive side of the ball, mainly at wide receiver and tight end. It is more than likely that the Jets will not be bringing back Santonio Holmes, so the Jets will have cap space to address the position. Guys like Eric Decker, Hakeem Nicks, James Jones, and Jeremy Maclin are all names that the Jets should be interested in adding to help boost the talent around Geno Smith.

The NFL Draft is also going to be huge for the Jets. The team should have around 12 picks in this years draft, and with those picks the Jets have the ability to really add some talent to the team. With their first two picks, I expect the Jets to add a WR and a TE, to go along with whoever they decide to add in free agency. The Jets have not had a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball for far too long, it is time for them to finally address what needs to be done for the team to take the next step and challenge the Patriots on the AFC East.

The Jets also have holes at safety, offensive guard, and outside linebacker, but I believe the Jets will look to address these positions in the third round of the draft or later, and also in free agency. Some names to look out for are TJ Ward, Brian Orakpo, Jarius Byrd, and Scott Chandler.

Overall, the Jets did much better than many expected this season, but next season the expectations will be much higher. This offseason is incredibly important in determining  the future of the New York Jets.
