After the whirlwind of midterms, students at Mercy University found solace in an event that blended creativity with relaxation: Paint and Unwind: A Post-Midterm Escape. Hosted in the commuter lounge of Hudson Hall, the event was a vibrant testament to the importance of self-care and community.
Alyssa Fernandes, the student behind the event, described her inspiration for organizing the retreat. “I understand the stress that midterms can cause,” she shared. “As a student myself, I recognize the pressure and anxiety that often linger even after exams are over. I aimed to create a relaxing environment where students can come together and clear their minds.”
The lounge was transformed into a creative haven. Tables were lined with an assortment of art supplies: canvases, tote bags, and pencil cases, each waiting for a splash of color. Students could choose any of the accessories that appealed to them most, whether it was painting a landscape on a canvas or personalizing a tote bag with their favorite quote or design. According to Fernandes, this variety was intentional: “I ordered a variety of supplies so that everyone can choose materials they feel comfortable using.”
Soft music played in the background, adding to the soothing atmosphere, while participants laughed and exchanged ideas. For many, the event was more than just an art session; it was a moment to breathe and reconnect with friends after weeks of studying. Hudson Hall’s commuter lounge, known for its lively energy, served as the perfect location for fostering this sense of togetherness.
Fernandes emphasized how she hoped Paint and Unwind would have a lasting impact on students. “I hope it helps participants recognize the importance of self-care,” she explained. “Additionally, I want it to inspire them to manage stress effectively and provide ideas for coping.” Judging by the smiles and conversations filling the room, the event succeeded in doing just that.
As the paints dried and the lounge emptied, students carried their creations—and a renewed sense of calm—back into their busy lives. Paint and Unwind proved to be more than a simple escape; it was a reminder that amidst the demands of academic life, creativity and self-care are essential tools for thriving.
With the success of this event, students are already looking forward to more opportunities like this to unwind and express themselves.
