Members of Mercy College’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) made a significant contribution to the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry, located outside the South Presbyterian Church on Dec. 4. The group brought canned goods collected during Mercy’s annual food drive and assisted in distributing the items to families in need.
The event showcased the student-athletes’ commitment to giving back to their community, particularly during the holiday season. The food drive, an annual tradition at Mercy, collected a variety of non-perishable items, including canned vegetables, soups, and other staples, which were warmly received by the pantry. The Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry serves as a critical resource for many families facing food insecurity, and the contributions from the SAAC members made a tangible difference.
Gabe Sanders, a SAAC member who volunteered, described the experience as both rewarding and meaningful. “It’s great to see the impact of our efforts and to know we’re helping families during the holidays,” he said. “Being part of this event reminded me how important it is to give back to our community and how much of a difference it can make.”
The student-athletes also took time to interact with recipients of the pantry’s services, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those in need. Gabe added, “It was a chance to connect with people and realize the value of small acts of kindness.”
By participating in the food pantry event, SAAC members not only provided immediate support to local families but also demonstrated the values of compassion and community service that define Mercy College. Their efforts strengthened the bond between the college and the surrounding community, serving as a reminder of the importance of giving back.
The event left a lasting impression on all who participated, inspiring them to continue making a difference through future initiatives. For the SAAC members, the experience was a powerful example of how collective efforts can create a positive impact, particularly during a season centered on gratitude and generosity.
