“I want to expand gaming across the school, not just make things possible for the club,” says Lianie Hugh, president of the 8Bit Club at Mercy University.
This sentiment drives his mission to make gaming a more prominent and accessible part of campus life. With the rise of esports and the growing popularity of gaming, Hugh sees the potential to turn the 8Bit Club into something that reaches beyond just a group of friends.
Gaming is a significant aspect of American culture. According to Statista.com, the gaming industry generates over $100 billion in revenue in the USA. At Mercy University, the 8Bit Club has emerged as a popular gathering place for students to hang out, play games, and relax. Lianie Hugh describes it as a laid-back, no-pressure environment.
“8Bit has no rules, just a place to come and chill,” Hugh says.
Hugh took on the role of president when the club’s founder couldn’t continue leading this year.
“I became the president as a freshman because the founder couldn’t do it, so I just stepped up,” he explained. Though he’s new to the role, Hugh’s enthusiasm for the club is apparent.
“I think that’s the coolest part about it. There are no rules. You just show up and enjoy yourself.”
The club has seen a boost in popularity this semester, and Hugh believes the move to a more central location played a big part in that. Last semester, the club met in Maher Hall, which many students avoided because of the long walk.
“Most people didn’t want to make that trip in,” Hugh says. “Now that we’re in the Main Building, it’s much more accessible. That change has helped us attract more people.”
With the new location, the club has grown and attracted more students interested in gaming, board games, and connecting with others. Hugh sees this growth as a sign that gaming is becoming a more significant part of campus life, especially with esports gaining popularity.
He also thinks Mercy College could do more to support its gaming community. “We have D2 sports, so it’s crazy that Mercy College only started funding a gaming club a year or two ago,” Hugh says. “Gaming is so big right now, and I think the school should embrace it more.”
As president, Hugh is focused on making 8Bit a key part of student life. He wants to create a space where students can relax, meet new people, and enjoy their favorite games together. Whether it’s board games or video games, Hugh believes 8Bit offers a unique space for students to unwind.
Looking ahead, Hugh is excited to continue leading the club and help it grow even more. His goal is to make 8Bit a central part of campus life, where students can take a break, have fun, and connect with others who share their interests.
