Lady Mavericks Go Down To The Wire Against LIU Post
Lady Mavericks battled to the end against LIU Post (13-6) but came up just short falling to Post by a score of 69-58.
The Mavericks (3-17) got a team high 19 points and 8 rebounds from sophomore Amber Brown as well as a career high 12 points from freshman Brianne Santos on 3-for-6 shooting from the field in 25 minutes.
The Mavericks lad by as many as 7 in the first quarter but ended the quarter only leading by 1 with late jumper from freshman guard Brianne Santos.
Despite Post starting the second quarter on a 12-2 run, the Mavericks responded with a 10-1 run of their own to get right back in the game and ended the first half with a deficit of 4 points. Santos scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half shooting 3 out of 4 from the field and 2 out 2 on three pointers. Junior Holly Sanders had a team high 5 rebounds at the break and Junior Abigail Collier contributed with 2 blocked shots.
In the third quarter, the Lady Mavs trailed by as many as 10 points but once again showed their fight and resiliency and cut the deficit down to three. By the end of the third quarter the Mavericks trailed by just 4 points and held LIU Post to just 21 percent shooting and only 14 points.
Post started the fourth quarter with a quick 5-0, but Mavs continued to fight and cut a nine point deficit down to five with just 1:15 remaining in the game. The closest the Mavericks would come would be 5 points and Post would close the game on a 10-2 run and ended up winning the game by a final score of 69-58.
The Mavericks were held to just 27 percent shooting from the filed in the second half and 28 percent shooting from three.
Sophomore Amber Brown scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half and also grabbed 6 rebounds in the second half.
The Lady Mavericks will play LIU Post again on Feb. 23 at 1:30pm on the road in Brookville, New York.
