The Mercy Mavericks women’s basketball team snapped a 14 game losing streak led by sophomore guard Amber Brown tying her career high with 34 points.

The Mavs defeated the the University of the District of Columbia by a score of 66-62.

Brown went 8-for-15 from the floor and 17-for-18 from the foul line. Twenty-three of her thirty-four points came in the second half, going 5-for-9 from the floor and 12-for-12 from the line.

The Mavs got off to a 10-for-3 deficit in the first quarter before Brown hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 10-5. The Firebirds responded with a 7-2 run to take a 10-point lead and ended the quarter with a seven point lead by score of 19-12.

The second quarter saw the Mavs fall behind by 11, but they would respond with a 12-2 run to cut the Firebirds lead to one, capped off by a jumper from Brown. The Mavs trailed by one going into the break holding the Firebirds to only 8 points in the second quarter.

Brown scored 11 points in the first half going 3-for-6 from the field and making 5 of 6 from the line. Brown also had 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

A slow start tho the third quarter saw the Mavericks trail by 14 which was their largest deficit of the game led by a 15-2 run by the firebirds. With under four minutes remaining and the Mavericks down by 13, it appeared as if the Firebirds were going to pull away for good but the Mavs continued to show their fight. They ended the quarter on a 10-2 run and what was once a 14 point deficit became a 5 point deficit going into the fourth quarter.

The momentum carried into the fourth quarter by scoring four straight points to make it a 1 point game. Overtime it appeared as if the Mavericks were going to get over the hump, the Firebirds always seemed to have an answer to stop the momentum.

With just under five minutes left in the game, the Mavericks trailed by four before Brown scored four straight points to the game at 56 all. The Mavs finally got over the hump and took a 3 point lead with 2:30 left on the clock thanks to a three pointer by senior forward Cynthia Perez.

After seeing the Firebirds make it a 1 point game, a layup by freshman center Alexis Lake brought the lead back up to three with just under two minutes remaining.

It was a one possession game before Brown made it a 5 point game by converting on a three point play to tie her career high 34 points.

The Mavericks never looked back and by outscoring the firebirds 26-17 in the fourth quarter, they went on to win 66-62 to end their 14 game losing streak.

The Mavericks next home game will be Saturday, Feb. 16 against Molloy College at 12 p.m.
