Women's Basketball Beats Bridgeport In a Close Game

All Maverick starters scored in double figures which propelled the Mavericks to a 71-68 victory over Bridgeport this previous Saturday. The Mavericks are now (7-12) and have snapped a nine game losing streak. Bridgeport fell to (4-16) after the loss. Despite the losing streak, Mercy is only one game out of the last ECC tournament spot.

Sophomore guard Taysha Bender had her season high with 19 points. Freshman sensation guard Katie Wall continued her breakout season by scoring 16 points. Senior Forward Amber Brown had a double double scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Kyle Felton had a game high 20 points for Bridgeport.

Mercy started off the game hot and went on a 11-3 run. Bridgeport fired back but then Mercy was able to close the quarter on a 13-0 run and a 24-10 lead heading into quarter two.

The second quarter was back and fourth but Mercy finished the quarter on a 8-2 run and lead 40-28 at half.

Bridgeport had the hot hand to start the second half and trimmed the Mercy lead to six. Eventually the purple nights got the score to within one heading into the final quarter of action.

The Purple Knights took the lead to start and eventually went up by six. The Mavericks defense tightened up and shut out Bridgeport for the remainder of the game. They ended the game on a 9-0 and secured the victory.

Mercy shot 37 percent from the field and Bridgeport shot 39 percent. Mercy held a 45-35 edge in rebounds for the game. Mercy will look to build on this victory during their next game against St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday, February 1st.

Mercy lost by 31 during there last meeting with St. Thomas Aquinas and will have to come out strong on Saturday.

Amber Brown is leading the team in scoring averaging 13 a game. Katie Wall is second on the team averaging 12 points per game.
