Men’s Soccer Wins First Season Opener in 3 Years
To start the season, the Mavericks beat The College of Saint Rose on the road, 2-1, with a game-winning goal by senior Benjamin Van Buren, earning their first season opener in three years. Van Buren led Mercy as he scored his first goal as a Maverick.
Saint Rose took an early1-0 lead in the 11th minute with penalty kicks due to a Mercy yellow card. Hilmar Halldorsson’s kick was initially saved, but Halldorsson recovered to put the Golden Knights ahead 1-0. It was junior Daniel Rodriguez who tied the game up in the 42nd minute, drilling a loose ball in the middle of the field. This goal was Rodriguez’s first goal as a Maverick in his debut. He also had a team-high shots on goal.
The game stayed 1-1 with 5 minutes remaining, a tie looking imminent. A headed loose ball over the goalie in the mid area off a restart by Van Buren gave Mercy a 2-1 in the 88th minute. The Mavs backline held off Saint Rose for a victory in the season opener.
