The Mavs Field Hockey team is making waves early this season, boasting an impressive 5-2 record.
Leading the charge is Madison Preston, who has been an absolute standout with three goals and two assists across the first six games. Preston’s presence on the field has been nothing short of electric, amassing a team-high 31 shots and consistently putting pressure on opposing defenses. Her 22 shots on goal are a testament to her aggressive play and eye for finding scoring opportunities.
Another offensive dynamo has been Samantha Trickel, who has netted three goals herself, showcasing clinical finishing with a shooting percentage of 21.4 percent. Trickel has been a catalyst for the team’s attack, scoring crucial goals that have kept the squad ahead in critical moments, including one game-winner. In addition, Charlotte Sabert and Kelly Rosenfeld have been pivotal to the team’s success. Sabert has been directly involved in key plays with two goals and two assists, while Rosenfeld’s two goals and one assist add further depth to the offensive arsenal. Sabert’s two game-winning goals underscore her knack for clutch performances when the team needs her most.
This has been a huge reason in the Mavs perfect 4-0 record at home, averaging 2.75 goals a game. When asked about her success on their home turf, Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola said, “The amount of fans that show up to the home games has been a tremendous help….and now that we’re making an impact in the NE10 a lot of more people are showing up.”
On the defensive end, Kasey Volz and Reagan Lane have been pillars of strength, playing all 360 minutes this season. Their leadership and discipline have helped the team limit opponents to just 11 goals across six games, with a solid defensive structure that has been hard to break down. Despite the pressure, goalkeeper Rebecca McClure has also held down the fort between the posts, contributing to a defense that has allowed opponents to take only 53 shots compared to the team’s explosive 121.
Spinazzola is no stranger to a nail-biter victory, compelling a great 4-1 record in games determined by two goals or less.
She says the change of conference has been the team’s key to success. “Going into the NE10, it is a lot more competitive…they’re a very young team so we prepare to always be the underdog and are always fighting to get an insurance goal…it’s a lot of their handwork and determination throughout to secure that win”.
As they charge forward, the Mavs are not just looking to keep their hot streak alive—they’re gunning for the top spot in the league. With key players firing on all cylinders and the team playing with incredible chemistry, this might be just the beginning of a special season.
