When one talks to Coach Ana Todorovic, the first thing one notices is her energy: grounded, focused, and passionate. Now entering her fourth season as Head Coach of Mercy University’s Volleyball team, she’s led the Mavericks to their best start since 2001, and she’s just getting started.
“Every year, this program gets stronger,” she said. “We’re taking things one game at a time, focusing on hard work and unity. Not predictions.”
Originally from Serbia, Todorovic brings a distinctly European style of coaching to Mercy, one defined by discipline, technique, and ball control. Her philosophy blends international fundamentals with the dynamic energy of collegiate athletics in the U.S.
“I come from a system where ball control and fundamentals are everything,” she explained. “I wanted to bring that to Mercy and to teach our athletes not only how to play, but how to think and move with purpose.”
Under her leadership, Mercy’s volleyball program has become known for its diversity and international presence, with players representing Poland, Puerto Rico, and beyond.
“Our team is a mix of cultures and styles where everyone learns from each other,” Todorovic said. “It’s something positive that builds respect, connection, and creativity.”
A former professional volleyball player and national champion, Ana’s experience spans decades of both triumph and challenge. She often reflects on the lessons she learned from her own coaches , the good and the bad, and uses those experiences to guide her athletes.
“I’ve learned from all types of coaches,” she said. “The key is to give back and to teach not only volleyball, but life lessons. I want my players to graduate with great GPAs and confidence in who they are.”
Her coaching philosophy is deeply personal: she never misses a graduation, attends games with passion, and emphasizes accountability both in class and in competition.
“Practice should prepare you for more than the game. It should prepare you for life.”
As Mercy celebrates its 75th anniversary, Ana’s mission is clear: she wants to hang another banner in the gym.
Last year’s NCAA tournament appearance was just the beginning, and she’s determined to make this season one to remember.
“We want to make history for Mercy,” she said. “To see our names on those banners — that’s what drives us every day.”
Coach Todorovic leaves her players, and everyone she meets, with a piece of timeless advice:
“Whatever you choose to do, do it with your whole heart. No regrets. Give your best every single day. It’s that mindset that continues to define the Mercy Volleyball program: resilience, excellence, and heart. That’s the mark of a true Maverick legacy.”
