When Gabriela “Gabby” Bieniek first picked up a volleyball at eight years old in her hometown in Poland, she never imagined the sport would take her across multiple continents and across the country. From Europe to Alabama, Iowa, and finally, to Mercy University in New York.
Now a senior and captain of the Mercy Mavericks Volleyball Team, Bieniek has become a cornerstone of leadership, discipline, and heart in representing not only international talent but also the spirit of persistence that defines Mercy athletics.
“From my very first call with Coach Ana (Todorovic), I felt something special,” Bieniek shared. “Her energy was warm, honest, and welcoming. I knew Mercy was where I wanted to grow both as a player and as a person.”
After transferring to Mercy in her junior year, Bieniek immediately found her rhythm with the Mavericks, helping the team push into championship territory and make an NCAA tournament appearance, which was a moment she calls “unforgettable and full of emotion.”
Majoring in finance within Mercy’s School of Business, Gabby exemplifies the balance between athletic and academic excellence. She’s an active member of the Finance Club and recently joined a women’s empowerment group on campus.
“I really appreciate how my professors bring real-world experience into the classroom,” she said. “They don’t just teach business — they live it.”
Her favorite course so far has been Corporate Finance, which sparked her passion for analyzing data and exploring future roles in global business. She admits, however, that accounting has been her toughest challenge, and one that she tackles with the same determination she brings to the court.
Having experienced the sport across three states and two countries, Gabby understands how different systems and styles shape athletes.
“Everywhere I’ve played has taught me something — not just about volleyball, but about people and culture. That diversity is what makes Mercy Volleyball so special.”
She credits Coach Ana for fostering an environment where international players can thrive while embracing Mercy’s inclusive and supportive culture.
As she prepares for graduation, Gabby is exploring internship opportunities in finance and international business, while also considering a personal training certification to keep her passion for fitness alive.
Her message to incoming freshmen is simple but heartfelt:
“Cherish every moment. These four years go by so fast. Give your all, on and off the court because one day, you’ll look back and realize how much you’ve grown.”
For Bieniek, Mercy isn’t just a school. It’s a home where dreams, discipline, and determination come together in perfect balance.
