The Buckeyes landed a massive verbal commitment from 2024 prospect Aaron Scott yesterday, keeping the #2 player in Ohio in his backyard and out of the states of Oregon and Michigan. A recruiting battle as bewildering as Scott’s over the last several months ended in the only way it could have.
Pure delusion.
As Scott began his announcement, he started by removing the Ohio State and Oregon backpacks immediately off the table, an awful, awful first sign. He proceeded to hold up the lone Michigan backpack for the room to see. I thought that was it, the kid was headed to Ann Arbor and Ohio State was going to miss out on yet another top recruit. Here we go again.
Just for the 17 year old to pull a white Ohio State jersey out of the bag and throw it on with a roar of cheers from people in attendance.
How can you not love this kid already? Absolute brilliance I tell ya. Stuck it right to every sleazy Michigan fan out there. Man do I bathe in their misery.
Furthermore, the future star ranks as the 5th ranked cornerback in the country per 247 Sports, pairing him up with the 4th ranked cornerback in the rankings and fellow Ohio native, Bryce West, to make a fierce duo in Ohio State’s class. As they say, the best in Ohio, stay in Ohio.
Earning a pledge from the prospect out of Springfield, Ohio was not only a juicy July victory over the archrival Wolverines, but another huge building block to a promising recruiting class. The Buckeyes currently hold the #2 ranked class in the country for 2024, with quite a few key defensive targets still to make their college decisions in August.
But just how important is Aaron Scott to Ohio State?
Well, he’s everything at the moment. The OSU secondary has been a glaring area of vulnerability over the last few seasons; there’s no other way around it. A surplus of first round NFL offensive talent just wasted in the process. Frustrating isn’t even the word, but nonetheless, these are the players that help change that.
Scott profiles as an athlete with great length and superb ball skills. His athletic ability will allow him to play tight and aggressively on receivers, which has staggeringly lacked in the position room over the last three years.
Secondary coach Tim Walton has carried his baggage on the mission to improve. In just two years of being on staff, Walton has grabbed commitments from six 4 star cornerbacks. Jalen Ramsey called him the best coach he’s ever had for a reason folks, now it’s just time to see it.
As for Michigan, the Wolverines still have yet to land a defensive back commitment in their class after missing out on Aaron Scott and Bryce West. Their two biggest priorities at the position told them no because they wanted to play their college career in Columbus instead.
There’s a term in German called schadenfreude, which in English translates to “delight in another person’s misfortune.”
Boy did Aaron Scott fill me with schadenfreude yesterday.
