That’s right. You read the title, but don’t be disappointed or jump all at once. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on where you side with this, I find Die Hard to be exclusively an action movie that just so happens to have Christmas going on in it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie just as much as anyone else, but I think it’s time to face the truth. This movie is fairly a favored one for Christmas, but it doesn’t act like other Christmas movies. So how is it widely considered a Christmas movie?
I find it quite interesting to interact and have people state their opinions of why they feel like Die Hard is truly a Christmas movie. I will say that some people bring in elements directly from the movie and argue it very well, while others…not so much.
For starters, the adults that argue how it feels like a Christmas movie because “I don’t know…it just feels like one” is not a valid argument. If that’s all it takes for you to be convinced…cool, but that is not a great point at all. If I simply say that “Home Alone is the best Christmas movie just because it feels like it has to be” to people that don’t think so, you likely wouldn’t convince anyone of it and make them want to fight you.
Now, when people argue with points in the story, I can at least respect your take in that way. A few students and my art teacher in my high school years brought up an interesting point on how the main character is losing his relationship with his wife and attends the famous Christmas party in the building where it all happens. She made the point that the whole terrorists taking over the building thing wouldn’t have happened if there were more guards in the building on any other day. She suggested that because there were less guards because of it being Christmas, that is what led to the easier attack and takeover of the building.
Well, it just so happens that she might not completely be wrong because this is a common thing with security. Security usually have significantly less guards when there is a holiday, especially one like Christmas because they do not want to make that much guards work a holiday, but they can’t ever let a big building go unwatched of course. However, even though this is a good point in circumstances, this doesn’t convince me of what makes something constitute itself as a Christmas movie.
I’m not angry that some people consider it a Christmas movie, I just don’t get what makes Die Hard special for Christmas when other action movies that can take place in the snowy season don’t get called a Christmas movie as well.
Not only this, but for me personally, what makes a Christmas movie to me is not simply if it takes place in the season of winter and has snow, or even takes place during Christmas only. It needs to have Christmas themes and elements to make it feel that way too. What I mean by this is that for example, people love to compare Die Hard to Home Alone, saying that “Well if Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie, then Home Alone isn’t either.”
In the case of Home Alone, not only is it labeled as an “Interest” movie for Christmas, but its theme screams Christmas more to me than Die Hard every time.
