The new Scream 7 movie has just arrived and its reviews are now being put on Rotten Tomatoes and well…it looks like it could be another mediocre horror movie. With that being said, should this franchise just die and move on, or will this movie revive the franchise? If it were up to me, I think I would’ve just moved on from this series a long time ago.
Well to their credit, the first movie was something fresh and very unique when it came out back in 1996. More specifically to me, the genre of horror is possibly one of the most overdone genre’s in the history of movies, besides action and romance movies. So, when the very first movie came out, I truly felt that there was nothing like it and how that movie somehow mastered balancing comedy and horror. From the very beginning of the original movie, they keep the tone of teasing other horror movies softly and how they are guessable. This had a fresh take on the genre, while following similar footsteps in providing their own horror story.
Not only this, but I feel like you are never going to top the OG story and its antagonists! They are simply too good! The actors had amazing chemistry together onscreen and really had me shocked that it was them! As with the new movie, if you look at it’s genres, it says that it is still a horror movie, but also a mystery and thriller one. This tells me that they are getting farther away from what made the original movies great.

To be fair, I still have yet to watch the new installment to the franchise, but I am hearing quite mixed opinions on it, such as the main antagonist(s) under the ghost face mask being “disappointing” and some characters not making it that more fun, like Sydney’s daughter. I would’ve thought that everyone would have overall been excited to see a familiar face, the original protagonist return even having a daughter! But it is possible that the move can feel like a desperate cash crab to bring Sydney back to make more money because of the controversy of them firing Melissa Barrera because of videos that she made commenting on the Israel-Hamas war, also making Jenna Ortega leave the project years before it came out.
Not only is the original protagonist back with her daughter causing controversy, but apparently they also brought back Matthew Lillard as well, even though his character has been dead since the end of the first movie! It is actually unclear if he is in the movie, or if they just wanted him to promote the new movie because of how popular he was from the original one. But one thing is for sure, they wanted to bring two familiar faces back, this actor and actress for nostalgia purposes because of them having to let go of their two previous newer faces to the Scream franchise.
Faces aside, ever since this movie has been out now, the reviews from the people were…not great. On the one end, there are only 174 critic reviews that trashed the movie, getting an overall 31% on critics recommendations put together. But on the other hand, there are 2,500+ online regular watcher critics that put together an overall decent number, making it out to add up to a 76% overall, meaning that barely over half of people would recommend the movie.
The movie doesn’t have just bad ratings overall, but they’re just not as high as someone who was anticipating the movie would want them to be. Of course when it comes to making a decision whether to see the movie or not, I wouldn’t let reviews ruin it if I was that interested in a movie with a franchise I used to follow.
As for me, I am probably going to end up checking it out with people anyway, so they may have won the battle of getting me interested, but it still doesn’t win the war of convincing me that it is going to be better than any of the other ones, or even some of them. Still, I’ll try and keep a “sharp” and open mind on my opinions on the movie!
