What is going on with movie recommendation ratings recently? There have been more and more controversial movie rating takes on websites and apps such as Flixster, Fandango, and Rotten Tomatoes. It seems this may be because they don’t care much about how they rate movies anymore, or maybe people are giving newer movies a bigger chance.
Let me explain. One example is possibly one of the most conflicting new editions of the year. It is a recent movie that came out, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and has brought controversy in terms of how high its rating is for the audience rating on the previously listed sites. It has a 48% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89% audience rating.
The reason this particular film is getting controversy is that, from what I have seen and heard from reviewers, content creators, etc., online, the movie itself is fun enough for a kids’ movie, but it does not do enough to explain why it runs as long as it does.
In other words, some people just simply think that the first one is better as a whole, but some make the point that the main characters solve their problems quickly for the majority of this movie. What this has to do with the ratings and main points goes deeper than someone could think, though.
It sounds like the general audience can’t see eye to eye that much on how good it is. However, it is argued that it still does its job as a movie meant to entertain the kids, most specifically, but the first movie, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” was highly enjoyable for everyone, adult and kid alike.
Both movies are said to be meant for everyone since they are both listed as “PG” movies, but the second one was stated by a known online YouTube and Twitch user “Moist Critical/penquinz0,” who argues that this new sequel Mario movie is meant more for the children exclusively compared to the original. Not only is it Moist Critical, but if you even go to Flixster, it’s another point against the movie.
However, the main point I agree with is that nowadays, people give better ratings to some of these movies that should be enjoyed by everyone, but are enjoyed more by children. But the parents give the movie good ratings online anyway. It’s almost like they shun their own opinion just so they can give a good number “for the kids” to let other parents know it’s good enough for them, but they don’t talk enough about how they feel about the movie themselves.
There are so many OG’s out there that have good ratings and are classics to a majority of the community and are meant for adults and kids alike. Some examples are: Tarzan, Toy Story, even a classic like “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” The Incredibles 1 and 2, which were both released in 2004 and 2018.
It was agreed in Moist Criticals’ video on it that back then, the audience used to actually judge a movie fairly and didn’t “go easy on it” just because it was a children ‘s-targeted movie. At the end of the day, movies do better with certain age groups, but even if it is a PG movie, it is meant to give anyone watching it a good time. Plus, as it goes for any other opinionated topic, you’ll just have to see it for yourself if you’re somewhat interested in it.
