There are only a couple of movies I have seen within my lifetime that capture the importance of living in the moment. There are also a few movies I have seen that do it with a backdrop of a couple’s entire relationship. You experience the highest of highs and lowest of lows when you fall in love. Oddly, that’s the beauty of it, letting someone completely into your life and being utterly vulnerable.
We Live in a Time perfectly captures this theme of complexities within a relationship. However, it hammers home how we have to live in the moment. Do not worry about the future or what your life will be like in the next six months.
Variety states “Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield have Genuine Chemistry in Contrived Cancer Drama” which couldn’t be more true.
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh put on a master class on acting while both delivered such humane performances. You completely believe their relationship and their points of view on life. Each written piece of dialogue between the two doesn’t feel like it was ripped out of a cliche romance novel. It feels like these characters are real people, with real emotions, with real dreams and ambitions.
Andrew Garfield coming off his second Oscar nomination will hopefully receive his third for this heartbreaking performance. While Florence Pugh continues to pile her resume with great film after great film. I am sure she will receive her second Oscar nomination this coming year with just a beautiful and vulnerable performance.
This movie perfectly captures nonlinear storytelling. Which is telling a story not in the form of point A to point B. However, jumping around to moments not in order of how they happened. We are shown happy moments then sad moments back to happy. It perfectly captures how difficult falling in love can be. How it means to be loved means to be seen and heard.
The thing about this film that completely left an effect on me would be the message of living in the moment. We see this couple sometimes think too far down the line or make decisions that don’t require immediate action. Especially, when Florence Pugh’s character Almut battles cancer and makes a decision that represents this theme.
I think anyone can relate to this movie in many ways for many different reasons. Anyone and everyone is guilty of thinking too far ahead.
Ferries Bueller said it best, “Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
John Crowley the director of We Live in a Time crafted a beautiful movie about the importance of living in the now, there’s a reason it’s called the present. If you ever want to remember the beauty of falling in love or just experience the importance of human nature.
