My escape from reality starts once I hit play. Whatever is going on within my life, I can just forget about. Whether it is the assignment due tomorrow or how hell my Friday will be this week. I can escape that by being able to hit play on a movie I have been dying to see.
That is why film or art can be so important in our daily lives. It can be an outlet for many people like me who feel overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by whether it is their job, relationship, or school. You just need to experience what is going on in someone else’s life – almost. You need to see if Matt won the big game or asked out his crush to the homecoming dance. You need to know if Tom Cruise can save the world one last time.
Film or television allows you to be part of something no matter who you are. It will enable you to understand that you aren’t the only 20-year-old who doesn’t have everything figured out. That you aren’t the only one with relationship problems.
Film or television can also teach you about many aspects of life. It can teach you about the grief you feel when losing a loved one. It can teach you about the importance of friendship and how they are people that will be in the rest of your life.
The biggest thing I have learned from a film was not to take life too seriously. This might sound dumb, however, this is really important. We all overcomplicate the meaning of living and how you should go by it. Also, how there should be a certain structure we follow.
However, that is the complete opposite. Life will throw a thousand things at you, most likely none that you prepared for. So, stop trying to make everyday perfect, rather embrace every moment you are in.
Great coming of age movies have taught me this, like “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” Ask that girl out, chase that promotion, stand up to someone who holds you down. Life is too short to think how great you could’ve had it.
Movies or television, in a way, show you how if you made these choices, you wouldn’t live with regret. This is because most of the time, you identify with the main protagonist, and you see yourself within them. That is why you have such a strong connection with this film. This is you in an alternate timeline.
Movies or television highlight someone else’s perspective on the world. That is why it is divisive, opinionated, and some viewers might not agree. However, that is the beauty within production. Someone’s creative ability is showcased to the world and this sticks out as maybe not everyone will agree with you.
These platforms, productions show how if you are creative or have a creative intellect. You should show that to everyone, let a stranger in your life.
This “format” will always be my thinking capsule and escape from reality. Whenever I have a lot going on, like I have nobody who has any idea on what I am going through.
I just find my comfort movie, then hit play.
