“If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule”? Is one of the coldest lines I’ve seen in cinema, especially before killing a man.
Came across this film my freshman year of High school, since then have never looked back or had second thoughts about it. No Country for Old Men is a masterpiece to say the least, from the insane plot to the score, grit, characters, there is one thing that has always stuck with me, the villain.
The main antagonist of the 2007 film directed by the Coen brothers is a sick, twisted, psychotic hitman whose name goes by Anton Chigurh. He is hired by an upper man to find our main character Llewelyn Moss, who is played by Josh Brolin. Anton is played by Javier Bardem in which has become one of my favorite actors simply because of this role he played. He steals every scene he’s in and sends shivers down my spine mainly from his delivery and dialogue. A group of psychiatrists did a variety of tests, and it turned out he is the most accurate character of an actual psychopath and sociopath.
To be more specific, there is a gas station scene in which you truly see how uneasy he makes you feel as an audience. It was shot as a one take and is a very noticeable scene in cinema. My favorite line he says is ” What’s the most you’ve ever lost in a coin toss, which does not sound too crazy, but has a very dark twist. He knows everything about everything, if that makes sense. He has a very cold, insane demeanor, creepy haircut and using a silencer shotgun makes him a very specific character in cinema. His way of killing is very unsettling and stays in the back of your mind for a while. Many other characters are often scared or overwhelmed by his presence.
“He seems to be effectively invulnerable and resistant to any form of emotion or humanity,” the researchers explained, describing Anton. Here are some quotes from some critics and audience members about his monster of a character.
“Dude was terrifying,” wrote one Redditor.
“This dude always…scared me. You could never get away from him. He always found you,” said another.
The only way to get away from him? Turn off the movie, which one Redditor had to do.
