DIY Hair Mask
One thing that I’ve been concerned with is conditioned hair, and in the natural community, there are many ways to get that. One of those ways is DIY hair masks. They are pretty much hand made conditioners using natural food products acting as deep conditioners. I know that sounds weird and gross, but it works like you wouldn’t believe. But before we talk more about the hair masks, lets talk about the different hair types that these masks cater too.
They are normally:
- Dry and damages hair. This may go for hair that has been relaxed one to many times, dyed hair, and hair that has been exposed to to much heat (i.e blow drying and flat ironing)
- Curly hair… This doesn’t need further explanation. However, if you’d like to know what type of curls you have, you can always look at this website to figure that out.
- Natural hair. This is hair that doesn’t have chemicals in it like dyes, relaxers, perms, and other things of that nature.
- Frizzy hair… This also doesn’t need further explanation; although the frizz may be attributed to what your using in your hair. For more information on that, look here.
- Oily hair. Now, while oils are good for your hair, like all other things, too much of a good thing can kill you, or your hair at least.
So lets look at the masks them selves. Like I mentioned, they act as deep conditioners. Just take the ingredients blend together to get a smooth consistency, apply to hair put a plastic shower cap over you hair (or a plastic bag if you don’t own a shower cap) and let the mask sit on your hair for at least half an hour. And with that being said, lets talk masks. Than you wash and condition and you’ll see the results appearing one your hair starts to dry. With that being said, lets look into the masks.
- For damaged hair, try the one egg yolk, two table spoons of coconut oil, and one tablespoon of honey. The yolk provides protein to your hair which helps to strength your hair and also full of vitamins like vitamin D. The yolk will also help to condition your hair. The coconut oil will help moisturize your hair. Lastly, the honey also helps to condition your hair as well as lock in shine and moisture.
- For those curly girls in the world that are trying to regain their natural curls, i feel for you. It took me years to get my curl game on point; but if I knew of this mask, my wait time would’ve taken less time. For this mask, use one whole egg, two table spoons of mayonnaise, one table spoon of olive oil and one table spoon of honey. Like said previously, the egg will add protein and help condition your hair and the honey will condition too and look in moisture. Mayonnaise is oil based and will add shine, and soften your curls. The olive oil will add body and resilience (who doesn’t want that??)
- For you natural girls, use a half of avocado, one fourth of a cup of mayonnaise, two teaspoons of coconut oil and one teaspoon of honey. And like said before, the honey will condition and the mayo, as well as the honey, will add shine, and the coconut oil will will moisturize. The avocado is the surprising thing. Like the coconut, its like a super fruit! It can promote hair growth, help with split ends, revitalize your hair, hydrate it. Honestly, the list goes on!
- For you poor unfortunate souls that have frizzy hair, I’d like to first say I am sorry! I would also like to say you’re welcome for this hair mask. What you’ll need is one banana, one table spoon of honey and two table spoons of plain yogurt. The honey is for shine and moisture. The banana will strengthen your hair, minimize breakage and moisture it. The yogurt will help condition your hair as well.
- Last but not least, Oily hair. Now, this mask is quit watery so be careful. This warrants one fourth cup of apple cider vinegar (ASV), one juiced lemon, and one teaspoon of honey. The honey, like I stated for the other four hair masks, is for shine and moisture. The apple cider vinegar is will help balance your scalps pH; i am pretty much saying the ASV will close your scalps pours and help control them. Lastly, the lemon juice does the same as the ASV and also strips your hair from oil build up.
For these five masks, remember that if you have long hair, you may need to double up on the ingredients, but other than that, happy washing everyone!
