Best Friends Forever
No one would ever understand the way my best friend and I feel about each other. My best friend Danii and I have been friends since we were 3 years old. We met in daycare and have been friends ever since. Once we left daycare we went our separate ways. We went to separate schools. Time flew as we got older. Although we didn’t hang out as much as we did when we were younger, anytime we saw each other it was like we never left. When I turned sixteen my mother threw me a party and of course I invited Danii.
She came, and after that, we were inseparable.
After my party, we hung out every day. We would go to Harlem to see my other friends. While in Harlem we got into everything. We had a daily routine. We would wake up eat breakfast and go work out. We would then come home and shower. After our showers we would get dressed then head to Harlem. We stayed on 129th street in Lincoln Projects. We would jump double dutch, watch the boys play basketball, and then head to get food. We wouldn’t leave Harlem until 8:30 when it was dark and the day had passed.
Once we left Harlem, we would come back to the Bronx which is where we lived. We would go and get dinner then sit in her back yard and talk for the next few hours. This was our pattern every day for an entire summer. Since we are both technically the only child from our mothers we act as siblings to each other. We do everything together even now.
Every Sunday we go to get food and come home to watch movies. We call it our own little brunch. We have fun together. I wouldn’t trade my best friend for anything in the world. She is the closest thing I have to a sister besides my own.
People tend to feel as though they have to speak to their best friends every day. In our case, we don’t. Although we live across the street from each other we don’t see each other every day. It isn’t set in stone that we have to speak every day. The other day I had a debate with a classmate. She said you can’t have more than one best friend. I think you can. She didn’t believe so and she felt like there was a problem with having another best friend. I don’t see what the problem is. A best friend is a person who understands you. They are the people you tell your secrets to. When you have a best friend, they don’t judge you but sit there and listen.
She asked me if my best friend got jealous that I had other friends. I had to laugh because that was weird. To me that was something we did when we are like 5 years old. I had to tell her my best friend has another best friend. She asked if I got jealous. People do not realize you can have more than one best friend. Just because you aren’t always with that person or you don’t always speak doesn’t mean that you are any less of friends.
My best friend as a kid is still my best friend. I have a total of three best friends and none of them feel any type of way about the others. We are too old for that. Each one of my best friends came in at different stages of life. Danii came in at the age 3, Tiffanie at age 14 and Shiloh at age 18. We all have our reasons as to why we are close. I wouldn’t trade them for anything. No matter how far we are we still make time for each other.
Best friends are hard to come by these days. People aren’t the same as they were a long time ago. People don’t know the true meaning of friendship. When you have a good friend, you should hold on to them. They don’t come around much anymore. I’m thankful for the three that I have. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
I love them like sisters and I’m sure the feeling is very much mutual.
