Pop music has always been such a breakthrough genre. We grew up with icons like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and Kesha, just to name a few.
Now our generation has another strong female artist bringing back their type of pop music like never before.
Tate McRae is a 21-year-old singer, songwriter, dancer, and triple threat based out of Calgary, Canada. At just 13 years old, she was the first finalist on Canada’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” When she began to upload covers and videos of her original songs to YouTube, she gained traction, leading to the release of her debut single “One Day.”
Since then, McRae has been releasing what I call my favorite ‘F you’ anthems to all men in our society.
Her hit album “Think Later” released December 8, 2023 is the definition of showing a man what he lost and what he will be missing out on. This album came after her ex Cole Sillinger, the National Hockey League player for the Columbus Blue Jackets, cheated on her. Hence why she is wearing hockey gear on the album cover. If there is one undeniable aspect about her, is she knows how to throw shade at an athlete.
Tell me, how do you fumble a woman like her? I will never understand.
So, as expected, she dropped a music video for her single “Greedy” that showcases her taking back the confidence he tried to rob her of. There was no better way to do this than filming it in a hockey rink to throw that jab at him. “Greedy” represents the importance of balancing self-love and independence, while also being aware of the desire people have for you. This is one of the songs that make you feel good no matter what time of day or night you listen to it.
Then there is one of my personal favorites, “Hurt My Feelings”. Words cannot describe how much I love this song. But the volume level breaks the sound barrier every time I play it. If you have ever been in a situation where you know you live rent-free in someone’s mind, you want someone you can’t have, or you face temptations because of a person, this one’s for you. The production of this song is just amazing. Every time beats come in it is so smooth and hits the spot.
Her most recent release “It’s ok I’m ok” is a current fan favorite for many of her fans, myself included. McRae has this ability to consistently release songs that are just as great as the last. I feel like this song is her closest to matching the vibe of Spears. The singer pays homage when she gets ‘arrested’ in the music video very similar to the way Spears got ‘arrested’ in her “Criminal” music video from 2011. It was the most talked about music video scene all over TikTok, which was very reasonably so if you watched the music video.
I can go on about her songs and her music videos, but what really makes McRae such an incredibly talented artist is her stage presence on tour.
I got to experience this firsthand myself.
The visuals used for the show intro, transitions in between songs, and closing of the show all fit the vibe of the story she is telling. The way she strategically choreographs her performances never once failed to keep myself and other audience members captivated. There is a common misconception that many believe McRae only dances and just lip syncs. This is far from true. Her vocals sounded even better than the studio versions of her music. You really felt the passion behind every note.
Seeing your favorite artist in person performing your favorite songs live is an out of body experience everyone deserves to have.
In just a few days on November 14th, she is going to release her new single “2 Hands” and it’s music video.
There is no doubt in my mind this is going to be an anthem that breaks the internet once again.
