Beware Of The Dream Killers!

I’ve never realized how much stress lies in the questions “What’s your major?” or “What are you studying to be?” The truth is that questions like those can be pretty overwhelming and that is all because it reflects your dreams & goals. Recently after talking to a couple of students on campus, I’ve realized that fear of success is only one of the thing to worry about in terms of your dreams.

Dream killers. These are the people who aim arrows at your aspirations. They don’t enjoy seeing people going out of their way to achieve their dreams. Typically, these dream killers stick to all forms of reality because the never had the courage to follow their own dreams.

Chances are you probably someone like this. Dream killers are not always these negative people who seek to spread malice on your hopes. Often times, these people are your closest friends and family. Although they may not be as harsh, they can still make you question if your dreams are valid

I personally faced this experience before when it came to my dream of becoming a writer. When I first started college, I was unsure of what I really wanted to be. When it came down to selecting a major, I felt pressured into quickly choosing my field of study because I thought it would be better than entering college undecided.

I figured with no desire in science and my strong hate for hospitals that nursing would be a great career choice for me. Ultimately my decision to choose attempt to pursue this profession was stemmed from my parents. Any kid with West Indian parents knows how much they desire their children landing jobs in the medical industry. Any career outside of it just won’t do. I remember once hinting to my mother about possibly becoming a psychologist and cackled like it was the funniest thing she had ever heard.

The more I was pleasing my parents, the more depressed I became. My only enjoyable time spent at school was when I was in my English classes. There, I was able to really enjoy all of the great things about reading and writing. I felt that found something that I was not only good at, but something that I was very passionate about as well. After receiving all F’s from my science courses and one A from my English course, I realized that it was time for me to leave the thoughts of letting others down behind. Despite what anyone would say I knew that I had to follow my dream.

Following your dreams is not going to be easy. This is especially the case if you have people around you who to tear them down. One thing you must always remember is that your dreams are yours. You don’t have to share them with anyone. It’s your life and you should live it chasing all that you desire. The world is full of dreamers- always continue to be one them!
