This past week on Halloween Eve, Hudson Hall hosted its annual Halloween party that was open to all comers to dance and have a good time. Halloween is known for being a very scary day or nerve-racking time. This reflects how nervous it can be to be a college student trying to put yourself out there.
Halloween has many origins such as one being the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was a pagan festival that marked the end of summer with winter beginning. It was believed the spirits of the dead returned to visit their homes on Samhain. So, to shun the evil spirits people would light bonfires while wearing costumes and dancing around them.
Whether you are a freshman or senior at any type of college, putting yourself out there can be very challenging. It is strongly recommended you try or attend different activities like this one the past week.
Being a freshman especially it can be very difficult to make friends and adjust to college life. That is why it is important to attend very welcoming events just like this one because they are only for your benefit. Dressing up in costumes means you are not alone and you are likely to find someone who is struggling with the same thing you are.
Halloween has been around for almost a thousand years and still serves the same purpose. That purpose is to dress up and have fun while bringing new or old people together. Even though Halloween might have a scary theme or background behind it. It is meant to be celebrated with joy.
Rayanne Figueroa was one of the amazing leaders of this Halloween event. She had a lot to say about her hopes for this event and future ones.
“If there is anything I am hoping for it would be that a lot of people come to our party and have fun. We are trying to make everyone feel included, especially in this season of Halloween where it can feel very scary.”
Rayanne began to share more about the most important aspects of these events.
“Halloween being scary reflects the students on how they may be scared to put themselves out there. This party is helping them kind of take another step forward in terms of blossoming as an adult, especially in college.”
All grades of college students came together as one, as music was bumping, students were smiling, and Halloween scares began to float away. Yeslie Rodriguez, a student at Mercy, began to share his amazing experience at the Hudson Halloween event.
“The party was really really fun and the music was bumping. I should say the AC should be turned on as it is really hot in there. However honestly, it had a super cool vibe. I loved the party. It was a great experience and a lot of fun.”
It is strongly encouraged to try and come to more of these events down the line. Be on lookout for any flyers hanging up or remember to always check the Mercy campus life page to find out any information on any type of event. Next time you are feeling scared to step outside your shell remember there are a bunch of other students in the same boat as you.
