Connor Ruland, a senior at Mercy University, took part in the prestigious 2024 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum in Charlotte, North Carolina from Nov. 21 to Nov. 24. Traveling from New York to Charlotte, Ruland joined three other student-athletes from the East Coast Conference (ECC) for a transformative experience.
Before heading to the event, Ruland expressed his excitement and anticipation.
“I’m most looking forward to meeting new people from other schools and having the chance to learn new skills so that I can bring them back to Mercy and teach them to others,” he said.
The NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum brings together student-athletes, coaches, and administrators from across the country to foster leadership qualities, encourage collaboration, and inspire participants to make a positive impact on their campuses and communities. Over the course of four days, attendees engaged in workshops, discussions, and team-building exercises designed to enhance their understanding of leadership and personal development.
Reflecting on his experience, Ruland shared the profound impact the event had on him.
“I enjoyed the atmosphere that this event brought. Everyone was motivated and passionate about how they can become a better leader,” he said. “I love how the mission was to unfold our leadership skills and not mold us, because not everyone is the same—we are 1 in 8 billion.”
A key takeaway for Ruland was the importance of stepping out of his comfort zone to grow as a leader.
“A key takeaway that I took away was to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. We must come out of our comfort zones to achieve our personal growth,” he explained.
During the forum, Ruland had the opportunity to network with student-athletes from diverse backgrounds and institutions, broadening his perspective and gaining insights into different approaches to leadership. He also participated in collaborative sessions that emphasized the value of teamwork and adaptability in fostering effective leadership.
Ruland’s participation in the 2024 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum underscores his dedication to growth, both as an individual and as a leader within the Mercy community. By bringing back the lessons and skills he gained, he aims to empower his peers and contribute to a culture of leadership and excellence at Mercy University.
As Ruland’s senior year continues, his experience at the forum is set to leave a lasting impact, both on his journey and on the broader Mercy University community. His story serves as a testament to the transformative power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing opportunities for growth and leadership.
