College students have been influenced to find ways of being creative by developing their entertainment and staying active while living in campus dorms. The importance of entertainment in dorms helps students have a break from school and reduces the stress that they will often face while attending college.
Researchers have reported that a variety of ways that college students get entertainment comes from gaming, participating in leisure activities, and socializing with friends. Students who dorm on average spend at least 2o hours per week on entertainment that is associated with helping mental health.
Mercy University campus has always provided activities and events for dorm residents to feel engaged and build connections that will last forever. Students are welcomed to have fun hosted by residential assistants of the campus halls rather than feeling isolated in the rooms throughout the semester.
The events bring a fun experience for students to embark on that will create college memories and leave a mark for the next generation of students to continue the tradition.
Mercy student Jasmine Langer finds the campus events entertaining to step away from homework and has continued to attend these activities as much as she can while balancing work and school.
“The campus events are very cool and interesting to be a part of as a dorm resident. They mostly do games, parties, and fun activities for students to prevent mental health and to get out of their comfort zone,” Langer said.
Another way that students have found their entertainment on campus is by attending sporting events for all the athletic team home games and clubs around the school. The clubs are designed to bring new creative ideas that can benefit socialization for students and establish friendships in college. The idea is to allow students to join different groups of hobbies that let them find their interests for free time while living in campus dorms.
According to Inside Higher Ed, about 6o percent of college students spend at least one hour a week in student clubs on campus that involve the impact of participation. Students who participate in these clubs are finding a hobby outside of school that can be engaging and fun to be around something special that they enjoy the most.
Sporting events pack up all dorm residents to come to check out Mercy’s athletic teams compete at home which opens an exciting experience and gives a huge crowd of audience. Students can enjoy the fun of action as they cheer on the school’s sport teams and help them win the games with celebrations at the end.
Most residential dormers mostly show up to watch the men’s and women’s basketball games in the Neil Judge Center to support both teams and interrogate the opponents. The students are engaged in the physical competition of the game and are an impactful help to the school pull out a great performance.
Junior student Lucas Edwards has attended the basketball games, and he definitely enjoys watching both teams play hard and compete at a high level every time he sees them play.
“It’s fun to check out both the men’s and women’s basketball teams get better each year and win games at that are special. The action is fierce and brings the crowd involved to make some noise,” Edwards said.
Residential buildings also provide flat-screen televisions in the lounges on every floor for the dormers to watch TV outside the rooms if they don’t have entertainment. The televisions have streaming apps and cable shows sponsored by Samsung to deliver the students shows that they are used to watching.
Dormers are welcome to bring in their own TVs and gaming stations in the rooms to have their own entertainment and don’t feel like using the TV in the lounge. Some of the TVs brought in by the dormers are usually medium-sized with streaming apps connected to the station to provide entertainment.
Research has shown that below 50 percent of college students used their own television in dorms depending on the population of the school’s state. Students who don’t have TVs would stick to using entertainment by streaming apps from their laptop or smartphone to catch all the action.
Mercy sophomore Jason Pagan prioritizes his entertainment by using a smart computer to do work for classes and watching shows during his free time.
“The smart computer I have is easier for me to develop entertainment in my room and I can also play video games on here if I’m not busy throughout the day,” Pagan said.
Building entertainment in campus dorms lets students feel the need to have freedom and be active with themselves which can benefit mental health from becoming a problem. All the resources that the school provides make students welcome into a clean environment which is important in college.
College students are going to face tough challenges but having entertainment can change the perspective of allowing good mood and better success in school. Entertainment in dorm rooms is beneficial for students and should always be a mechanism to cope with stress and avoid mental problems.
