Christmas is a big part of American culture, with a Pew Research Center survey showing that over 90% of Americans celebrate it. For Christians, it marks the birth of Christ, while for others, it’s a time to embrace the spirit of giving, family, and joy. The holiday has roots in ancient winter festivals like Saturnalia and Yule, which were times of feasting, gift-giving, and gathering. Over the centuries, Christmas has grown into a season filled with traditions and meaning.
On December 13, Mercy College’s Dobbs Ferry Campus reflected that spirit as RA Blake Young hosted a Christmas event with hot cocoa and stocking decorating.
For Young, the event wasn’t just an activity. “I love the holidays, especially Christmas, and wanted to do something that reflected that,” he said. His love for the season was clear, as students gathered and enjoyed the holiday vibe.
For some, the hot chocolate was the main draw.
“Hot chocolate is really one of the reasons I showed up,” said Sophia Blouin , who attended with Jordan Wonack.
But they also enjoy other holiday activities. “We usually show up to things like gingerbread house decorating too,” Jordan added.
While the cocoa and treats were a hit, the event gave students more than just a snack. “I feel like this is a great way to meet people,” Sophia said, appreciating the chance to connect with other residents on campus .
Young admitted that hosting events can be tricky because of everyone’s busy schedules.
“It’s definitely challenging to plan things like this, but it’s great to see people show up,” he said. As an RA, he enjoys seeing his residents come together, even for something as simple as stockings and hot cocoa.
This was Young’s first holiday event, and it turned out to be a success. With “Winter Wonderland” playing in the background, students spent time decorating, chatting, and enjoying the cozy atmosphere.
The event brought people together during a hectic time of year, proving that even small gatherings can make a big difference on campus.
