The modern college student doesn’t open up a newspaper, turn on a broadcast or even click on a website. Today, younger generations turn to social media and leaves that gate open as to where the news cycle takes them.
Eliza Perez, Mercy University student, heavily believes social media provides news more accurately, and better stated conveniently, than other news sources.
“News covered on Twitter or Instagram is easier for me to read on what information is important,” Perez said.
News is received information that people see and hear every day in the world which reports important events or unknown facts for public opinion. Important topics come from the developments in politics, economy, health and entertainment.
Newspapers delivered information about what was happening in the world before the internet was popular. Reported news allowed radios and televisions to entertain people with facts and action.
In the 20th century, gathering news has decreased for younger generations who view news. The source is different and beneficial to the current generation who thinks news is entertainment. How young viewers follow news affects whether they are aware of the environment or are they gathering information.
Social media and news websites are the current resources to gather news for readers today. At least 90% of young adults consume news on social media daily with 43% following news on televisions or radios. Most information has drawn the readers to engage with certain categories while others don’t pay attention to news.
Technology has shaped news gathering simply for readers to understand the information clearly. Videos and pictures add an insight to news reporting as a visual tool. Media content uplifts news to be more interesting rather than losing the reader’s attention.
Broadcasting news from television or radios changes how people see news reports besides articles and a different view of collected information. At least 57% of young adults prefer to follow news on traditional platforms aside from local or national television news and radio stations.
Jonathan Bennett, Mercy student, thinks news coverage in the media over the years has translated better information and gained more viewers.
“The news we see today is more understanding and there are more ways that you can see news from a different perspective,” Bennett said.
The lack of news production impacts whether young adults follow the resources less or more often. According to Pew Research, 15% of young adults follow the news most or all the time. At least 50 % of young adults are less likely to follow national or local news that is not important.
More than 65% of age groups above young adults are more considerate to attract the media attention from all landscapes. Around 32% of sports and entertainment news grabs me attention from young adults compared to older generations.
Finding news in other ways is a struggle for less than 22% of young adults who often share information with others that seek the following report. The common issue with understanding news leads to confusion or fear of the information concerning emotion. The audience could feel worried by certain topics and forced to expand the research.
Perez feels trusting news can sometimes be misleading depending on what information is being reported that relates to her age group.
“Sometimes when reading certain news stories, it can be difficult to think if the reports matter or ignore when I don’t understand,” Perez said.
News coverage on Instagram or TikTok continues to provide short summary reports to younger audiences who are comfortable with and understand more. At least 50% of adults under 30 trust news coverage on social media sites based on the information gathered differently from local news organizations. Around 69% sometimes find news from Google or other search engines similar to ages 30 and up.
The viewers tend to follow new influencers on the sites that commonly focus on the political and social issues of the world. 30% of young adults mostly get political news because they are looking for it. The other 70% get the news when they happen to come across the information.
The coverage of news offers many platforms which people can read, see and hear for their own knowledge. Social media continues to dominate for young adults who are safe with understanding the news. News will always be reported based on how different generations follow the source.
