Thank You For Checking Out Creatures Corner!

I hope everyone received helpful advice by looking at my blogs and articles for the college paper. Also, I hope everyone has gained some knowledge when it comes to taking care of your pets health. The thing is, animals don’t speak to us and tell us that they don’t feel good. So it makes it harder for the owner to determine if their companion is sick or not.

Just remember, make sure your pets appetite has not changed. You always want to make sure that the animal has a good appetite. If there are any changes in the eating habits, such as eating more or less, then a veterinarian needs to be contacted. Especially if the animal is eating less or not eating at all. Usually this is a sign of illness. In addition, if you notice your dog, or cat, coughing or sneezing, then it’s best to get your companion checked out. When I mean coughing or sneezing, I mean coughing and sneezing excessively. An occasional sneeze is normal. Now, when it comes to vomiting, if the animal does it once, just keep a close eye on him/her. If the vomiting progresses, call a veterinarian immediately. In addition, if the animal has diarrhea, let your veterinarian know and keep an eye on it. If it gets worse and more frequent, bring the pet to the animal hospital. Dogs and cats tend to get dehydration if they are vomiting or having diarrhea. If your animal is having all of these symptoms, including loss of appetite, you need to seek veterinary attention.

Other ways for you to keep up on your animals health is checking over their skin. Are there any scabs, sores, dryness, or fleas, etc? If so it would not be a bad idea to get the skin checked out. The sooner the better! If you notice your dog, or cat, itching or scratching excessively, have a veterinarian take a look since the animal is probably uncomfortable.

Furthermore, always make sure your pet is urinating and defecating normally everyday. If you notice that your pet is not urinating or defecating on a daily basis or urinating and defecating smaller amounts, then the animal would need to be seen by a veterinarian to get checked out. Also seek help if you notice the animal straining to urinate or defecate.

Lastly, your animals gums are always supposed to look nice and pink. If you ever notice that the gums look white or blue, seek veterinary attention immediately! That could be a sign that the animal is not getting enough oxygen. Usually it can be caused from an underlying illness. In addition, always make sure the animal is breathing well. If any labored breathing is noticed, consult a veterinarian. Especially with cats. Cats should not be seen opened mouth breathing. If so, most likely a serious health issue is going on and the pet would have to be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

Again, its been my pleasure providing veterinary advice for your pets. Happy Holidays everyone and always remember, if you have any questions or concerns, contact a veterinarian. They are there to help.
