The Mercy college women’s basketball teams 10-11 season came to an end on Feb 26 in a 79-69 loss to Dowling College.
The team ended the season 4-17 in conference play and tallied a 6-20 overall mark. The six wins is two more than last years entire total.
The lady mavericks began the 10-11 campaign in style splitting their first two decisions which included a heart breaking overtime loss to Nyack College at the annual Dominican College Tip-Off Tournament. Since then wins have not been as easy to come by with two more overtime losses to NYIT and Molloy College respectively. The Mavericks also lost two intense games to rival C.W Post and a 65-63 road loss to Post University which was a tough one to swallow. All of these near misses have caused Mercy a shot at a more appealing overall record.
The win of the season would come against Molloy College at home 77-63. Mercy would open up a huge lead in this game with contributions coming from a few players. In total four scored in double figures including 10 points from Aysha Williams.
This season has been a hard fought one for the Mercy College Women’s basketball program. Tough losses seem to follow the team. Junior and senior leadership have been an important factor on this team. Ashley Borofsky led the team in scoring with 13.7 points per contest making her one of the top players in the ECC this year. She led the team with 2.2 threes per game and scored a total of 356 points in her senior season.
Simone Williams and Jasmine Williams played important roles this season. Simone Williams averaged 12.9 points, 4.9 assist and 2.3 steals per game. Jasmine Williams put up 12.4 points per game while leading the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
“We should definitely be better next year” said Jasmine Williams,” this year was a learning experience, making the playoffs is our ultimate goal.”
In the final game of the season, Ashley Borofsky poured in 23 points and MarQuesha Moore chipped in 10. Borofsky was perfect at the free throw line with six conversions, and finished the season with over 1,000 points.
Mercy fell behind for good after tying the game at 46.
The 10-11 Mercy College Women’s basketball team featured a blend of young talent as well as a dose of Junior and senior leadership. You must take baby steps before making leaps and bounds in the right direction. With only four seniors the team will return an experienced and poised group ready to build on this year’s triumphs and failures.
