1959 Pink Thunderbird Convertible is a theatrical event comprising two linked one-act comedies by acclaimed playwright James McLure. Presented first is Laundry and Bourbon, directed by Ed Friedman. The year is 1975, and on a hot summer afternoon in Maynard, Texas, friends Elizabeth and Hattie sip bourbon and coke, watch TV, fold laundry, and gossip insatiably about the many secrets that form the fabric of small-town life. The peace is disrupted by the arrival of the self-righteous and unbearable Amy Lee Fullernoy, who has a secret of her own that threatens to turn Elizabeth’s world upside down.
In Lone Star, directed by Lisa Spielman, we are introduced to Elizabeth’s husband Roy, his brother Ray, and the luckless Cletis Fullernoy, in a boozy, loquacious comedy about three men groping clumsily towards adulthood behind an east Texas bar in the wake of the Vietnam War. Set adrift in 1975 America, they latch on to anything that might help make sense of their new reality: Mars Bars, Lone Star beer, a 1959 pink Thunderbird convertible, the power of memory. Employing a volatile mixture of guile, love, violence, and wit, the three men redefine their friendship and future amongst the beer crates, milk cartons and moonlight.
1959 Pink Thunderbird Convertible features Tal Aviezer, Michelle Brandt, Peter J. Lillo, Holland Renton, Lisa Spielman, and Ed Walsh. For more information, please visit centerstageplayhouse.org.
