In honor of today being Halloween, I have decided to write about a new Netflix series that I binge watched over the weekend, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, or as some of you may not recognize the name, a simpler way to put it is the new version of Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I had seen the trailer for the series beforehand, but was hesitant to watch it because from what I saw in the trailer, it seemed like a scary, thriller type of show and I am not a horror fan one bit, but once I had saw that it came out on Netflix, I had decided that I was going to give it a shot and try to watch it. Let’s just say that I’m glad I did, because it was such a good show that I ended up finishing the whole season the next night!

As a kid, Halloween was one of my favorite holidays, mainly because I love candy and it was the one day a year I could get as much candy as I wanted, but also because as a kid, dressing up used to be fun for me. I remember as a young boy, I used to watch halloween movies all month long preparing for halloween, actually I shouldn’t say as a young boy because that’s exactly what I did the majority of this October and I’m an adult now! But anyways, I used to remember doing that as a kid and even sometimes I would watch the Old Version of Sabrina The Teenage Witch with Melissa Joan Hart playing Sabrina. Might I say, this version was very different from the original version, personally, I liked this new version a lot more than the original version.

The original version starts off where Sabrina doesn’t find out that she is a witch until her 16th birthday and how she balances her witch life with her personal life whereas the new version starts out with Sabrina as a half-witch and on her 16th birthday at midnight, she goes through something called the dark baptism where she becomes a full witch gaining all of her powers and having to give her freedom and mortal life up as she would have to transfer to a new school called the academy of unseen arts, which is where all of the witches have to attend after they become a full witch and gain all of their powers. But, after having doubts, Sabrina decides not to go through with her dark baptism therefore leaving her as a half-witch.

In the original version, we hear nothing of this dark baptism as the series opens with Sabrina finding out that she is a witch and how she has to maintain using her powers with her mortal life. While I get that the original version was supposed to be a comedy, I felt like the new version has a great way of showing the pros and cons of what it is like to become a full witch and how much it affects Sabrina and her life as a witch as well as her life as a mortal. Also in the original version, Salem which is Sabrina’s cat communicates to her by speaking but in the new version, Sabrina doesn’t communicate with him by speaking but instead by reading his mind in a way which through me for a loop.

What I liked about the old version was how it tried to make light of the situation and tried to make the fact that Sabrina was a witch in a comedy sense but at the same time, I wish that we would have gotten a little more information about her family background instead of finding out that Sabrina was a witch in the opening of the series premiere episode, I feel like maybe it would have been better for the viewers to find out in the ending of the episode and for the start of the episode to focus on how her family got these powers themselves.

In my opinion, the thriller of the new version of the series is what makes it more intriguing and what made me want to keep watching more and more. I am curious to know what they are going to make the season about since at the end of the first season, Sabrina signs the book pledging to the Dark Lord Satan and gains all her powers, though nonetheless I am still excited to watch it.

If you liked the original version and wanted to check this new version of the show out for yourself, it is now streaming on Netflix for you to watch whenever, I highly recommend it as it is something you don’t want to miss in my opinion!
